ABOUT THE SHOW
when the bubble bursts was created in collaboration with the La Jolla Playhouse for 2021's "Pop-Up" WoW event in Liberty Station. The piece weaves music, movement, and spoken text (including contributions from local community members) to explore the shared experience of the last 18 months and the months to come. Inspired by the words and reflections about this unique moment from local artists and community members, when the bubble bursts is a meditation on human connection and impermanence. Simultaneously a celebration of resilience and a reflection of adversity, this performance blends music, movement, and text to reignite the magic of live theater. Featuring a cast of 20 performers, some larger-than-life guests, and bubbles galore, this ‘happening’ explores some of the difficult questions posed by the past year while evoking the childlike wonder and curiosity conjured by life’s simplest joys.
The content for when the bubble bursts came from a wide range of community members who were asked to complete a survey asking them about their 18 months isolated, their hopes for the future, and their reflections on the past. Other moments stemmed from interviews used to create Refractions: A Collection of Human Anthems, and from our artists directly.
Our artists met and devised the movement featured in the performance together. After months of staying apart, the team was excited to meet again in person and create something meaningful - many for the first time since March of 2020. Explore some thoughts from our artists when asked what they are most excited for this performance:
"To feel the energy of the cast, crew, and audience together again. That aliveness of being in community and connecting with each other through art." - Karina
"The energy of an audience is such a magical thing, and the best performances are when both the spectators and the entertainers feed each other in a mutual loop with their essences." - Russell
"Getting to make people feel things has always been one of the best parts of performing, because it's a means to connect through a shared experience." - Annie
"If I can contribute to one person going home and thinking about how our collective expression relates to their life, it's all worth it." - Ricky
